Back in August 2024 Solihull IBC member Izzie White lifted the coveted Women's National Singles Trophy at Royal Leamington Spa. As well as being crowned England best women's singles player for the year she also received a very special invitation. To take on the world's best 'down under' at the World Champion of Champions event held in New South Wales, Australia.
Izzie, full of confidence after another fantastic outdoor season after winning the Women's Junior Singles and reaching the Finals of the Women's Fours, got off to a strong start defeating Namibia and Turkey on day 1 but a loss against New Zealand put her in second place after the first day.
Day 2 started with a tiebreak defeat to Japan, but wins against Philippines and Wales put Izzie in a strong position to qualify for the knockout rounds knowing 3 good results on day 3 would put her into the the later stages.
Day 3 didn't disappoint with wins over Zimbabwe, Thailand and Fiji cementing her place in the last 8 with a healthy 21 points and plus 52 shot difference.
Onto the knockout stages and Izzie faced up against Syafiqa Haidar Afif Abdul Rahman from Malaysia, a Commonwealth Games silver medalist from 2024. After picking up the first set by 1 shot Izzie was guaranteed at least a tie break and this match went down to the wire but Izzie held her nerve to book a place in the semi-final. Score; 6-5, 2-8, 4-0.
England had not had a women's finalist in this event since 2006, showing just how good the competition is from around the World.
Izzie lined up against Shae Wilson, Norfolk Islands. Shae herself being only 26, but having a wealth of previous experience at international level with appreances in the later stages of this event in 2019, the World Championships in 2023 and the Commonwealth Games in 2024.
Izzie started strong and was 6-4 up going into the last end of the first set. Unfortunately a score of 3 to Shae meant she nicked the first set, and then built up an 8-1 lead in the second. Izzie fought back strongly picking up 5 shots in the last 3 ends, but it was not enough to force a tiebreak. Final Score; 6-7, 6-8.
Shae went on to win the final against New Zealand 9-3, 8-4.
Everyone at Solihull IBC would like to congratulate Izzie on a fantastic tournament, and for bringing home a Bronze medal.
