Solihull progress in National Competitions

The weekend of the 5th, 6th and 7th of December was a busy one for many of Solihull IBC's members! Matches in the Mason Trophy, Yetton Trophy, Denny Plate and Top Club all being played over the weekend, with some fantastic results!

Mason Trophy

Friday morning, 10am, our ladies lined up against Tamworth IBC in the Mason Trophy. This National Competition is for our Ladies Over 60's team and we were hoping for a run similar to that of 2023/24 when we reached the Area Final.

On the day Tamworth proved to be a little too strong! The home rink of Margaret Priddey, Janet Griffiths, Janet Edgington and Ros Taylor returned a winning card. 15-13. But unfortunately the away rink of Ann Wooding, Von O'Brien, Joy Powell and Liz Wooding lost 8-31. The final score 23-44.

Hard luck to the ladies this time, but thank you for playing.

Yetton Trophy

Saturday morning was a busy for our teams with both the Yetton and Denny teams in action! Our ladies faced a strong team from Mid-Glos in the area semi final of the Yetton, but swept them aside with ease completing the victory with ends to spare as the Mid-Glos team conceded with the score 91-23.

Highest winning rink was Joy Powell, Faye Montgomery, Donna Amarilli and Michelle Meadowcroft with a 31-5 win!

All 4 rinks won with Thelma Orberson, Joyce Thompson, Ros Taylor and Liz Wooding, 24-5. Janet Griffiths, Janet Edgington, Lily Adams and Hannah Smith, 18-6. Margaret Priddey, Von O'Brien, Amy Williams and Izzie White, 18-7.

Huge congratulations to the team on their first year back in the event reaching the Area Final. Up next Huntingdon IBC on Saturday 3rd Jan 2026.

Denny Plate

Our men's team also took to the green on Saturday morning, facing Oxford City & County in the Denny Plate Area Semi-Final.

With the match close on 3 of the 4 rinks the deciding factor was the big win by Tom Holmes rink of Richard Weaving, Michael Tandy, Dan and Tom Holmes controlling the game and returning a winning score of 27-13.

Other rink wins were by Owen Dunkley, Jon Palmer, Roger Hill and Malc Follis 16-13, and Richard Lewis, Colin Stobbs, Steve Tate and Mark Burdett 17-15.

Our other rink of Ivor Amos, Andrew Powell, Matt Grundy and Callum Mitchell drew 16-16 with their Oxfordshire opponents, overall Solihull taking the match 76-57.

Congratulations to the team on reaching the Area Final. Up next Desborough (Northampton) on Saturday 3rd January 2026.

Top Club

Following on from the fantastic results on Saturday our players were full of confidence on Sunday morning as they faced Carterton in the Area Semi Final of the Top Club.

None more-so than Izzie White in the Ladies Singles. First on the green she raced into an unassailable lead, with precision bowls surrounding the jack each end. her opponent didnt stand much of a chance as Izzie ran away with the game winning 21-1 and giving the team the perfect start.

Up next in the Men's singles was Ryan Prosser, last seasons club champion. Producing another excellent display of line and length bowls Ryan returned a 21-8 winning score to put the team firmly in the driving seat with 4 points on the board.

While the singles were playing the other disciplines had it a little tougher. Our pairs team of Hannah Smith and Tom Holmes were 6-6 at 6 ends, 11-15 at 15 ends, 16-16 after 17 ends but unfortunately lost to the last bowl of the match 16-17.

Our triples team of Michelle Meadowcroft, Mark Burdett and Ben Harris got off to slow start and were 0-9 after 3 ends, 5-11 after 6 ends, but came back strongly with a 4 and a 5 to lead 14-11 after 8, 21-14 after 13 ends and returned a winning score of 27-14 after picking up a 6 on the 14th end.

Our fours team of Liz Wooding, Lily Adams, Callum Mitchell and Alex Lewis were always in front in their match, leading 7-3 after 6 ends, 10-8 after 8 ends, 12-9 after 12 ends. Their opponents briefly drew level at 14-14 after 16 ends, but our players dug deep to win the last 2 ends and take the match 17-14.

Congratulations to all players involved as they secured a 12 points to 4 win, and a place in the Area Final for the second year running. They now face Northampton IBC on Sunday 4th January 2026.
